Cheryl and Mike lead their Greek organizations, Kappa and Delta, to heights and popularity previously unknown to Black Greeks on Maryland’s campus. Cheryl’s charm and Mike’s musical skills and leadership make Maryland State University a mecca for the East Coast Step competition the Black Greek world flocks to at the end of each school year. But it’s Cheryl and Mike’s relationship that has everyone wondering what will happen when a young pledge to Mike’s frat leads Cheryl to become a born-again Christian. Cheryl learns God’s way of communicating and his view of women and for her life. This leaves Mike in the dark about the woman he wanted to spend his life with and the faith he turned his back on at an early age. When Perry decides to pledge, the transplanted demons of racial hatred have a field day, the same spirits that infiltrated the traditional Black Greek pledge program to the point pledges are treated worse than the black Americans who instituted these organizations in the early 20th century. Terror, brutal repression, and physical violence, pillars of the Jim Crow South, are expertly employed by the Big Brothers to drown pledges in a 24-hour ocean of subservience and second-class manhood as Perry soon finds. Cheryl has to rescue her Christian mentor from the wrath their relationship brings on him and his fellow pledges while realizing her true purpose in Christ regardless of the pledges she’s made to Delta and to Mike.
